At Douglas County Parents, our mission is to advocate for strong public schools by providing support to pro-public education school board candidates for the Douglas County Colorado School District.
We manage a small donor committee to raise funds to support candidates who are strong supporters of public education for all.
A small donor committee is a grassroots political organization that collects small contributions from individuals to support candidates, initiatives, or causes. Unlike traditional PACs, it imposes a maximum donation limit, $50 per person per calendar year, to stay true to its grassroots nature and avoid the influence of big money interests. These committees amplify the voices of ordinary citizens in politics, promote transparency, and empower candidates who prioritize constituents' concerns. There is an additional benefit that money limits are per calendar year, enable SDC to continue to raise funds in off elections years.
From the Brennan Center for Justice:
Over the years, small-donor public financing has emerged as the most powerful antidote to the outsize influence of megadonors in our elections. By enabling and incentivizing candidates to rely on support from constituents rather than wealthy donors, public financing gives everyday Americans a greater say in their elections and government. And as more state and local governments enact new programs or strengthen existing ones, evidence of their benefits continues to grow.
In an off-election year, donating to DCP is just as vital as during a major election cycle. Your donation now allows us to strengthen our infrastructure, expand our outreach efforts, and engage with our community year-round. With your support, we can continue to build momentum, cultivate grassroots support, and be prepared to make a meaningful impact when the time comes. As a small donor committee, the maximum allowable donation we can accept is $50 per person, per calendar year, but it goes a long way!
The limit is $50 per person per calendar year. This means a married couple can each give $50 per calendar year. The calendar year is January 1st to December 31st.
Why is the 2025 school board election so important?
Four seats are up for election, meaning the majority of the school board is at stake. We need candidates who will prioritize public education and keep the focus on students, not politics.
How does the school board election work?
School board members are elected at large, meaning all registered voters in Douglas County can vote, even though candidates must live in specific districts.
What kind of candidates do you support?
We support candidates who prioritize strong public education for all students, respect teachers, and make decisions based on local needs, not national political agendas.
How is the opposition funded?
Historically, the opposition has received large sums of money from individual donors and special interest groups. That’s why grassroots support is critical for our success.
